Camus "La Chute" is my favourite book, bar none. Time for a re-read for the first time in French this year. Read Sapiens when it came out, I was recommending it left and right to friends, albeit there are caveats and biases to be heeded, still a great read. Interesting read list here and some titles to add to my TRL.

This is so beautifully written. We share two things: I lost someone dear last summer too and words, the books she left behind, has been one of the ways I have stayed connected with her. Also starting the first half hour of the day with a book. So much better than scrolling. Will seek out some of these recommendations, particularly Still Life which I have picked up to buy and put down again so many times.

Thank you, Claire, and I hope you're managing OK in dealing with your own grief. The last few days have been particularly busy and I've failed to read on any of them and it really does feel like something missing all day long. I hope you pick up Still Life again soon. Takes 30-40 pages to really find its momentum, but my goodness, when it does...

Beautifully written Matt. Your words around grief are profoundly moving.

I gave Nessa 'Still Life' for Christmas and after reading your recommendation I'm looking forward to reading it after her. I read Blake Morrison's memoir after the death of my father and it resonated deeply. I must give the King Creosote album another listen. I'm a fan, but this album didn't grab me initially.

Thank you, Andrew, I know you've had more than your own fair share to cope with recently. I do hope Nessa enjoys her book, and you follow suit. The Blake Morrison memoir was everything I had hoped for. A literary agent recommended the book to me years back after reading a few pages of mine that she felt were from a similar place. Let me know on that KC listening. And let's do coffee soon....

Hello Matt,

I'm so sorry for your loss and the tough times of grief for you and your family, but I am always happy to read your writing, and very glad that you've reconnected with reading. Thank you for sharing the list, I love to have some new things to try.

Oh, and I always keep a stone in my coat pocket.

There's usually a stone in a pocket for me too, and a smooth one in front of me on the desk as I type now. It's lovely to see a friendly name from blogging past pop up. I hope you, P and family are well. x

Such beautiful words Matt. We need to see your words in a book - but you know how hard that is to get off the ground! xxxx

Yes, I know something of that difficulty! Thanks for your very kind words, Christine. I hope you're well. x
