As soon as I read “the pink Birmingham Sports…” I immediately thought of my grandad and his ‘pinkun’ as he called it (we were in Suffolk) which lead to the familiar smell of onions hanging in the garage and a Swift reminder of their pantry (forever cold) that they had as it was an old farmhouse. Thoroughly enjoying that nostalgia trip.
Lovely all around. Thank you!
You really have outshone yourself with that photo of the pickled onions Matt!
Some images just linger in the mind - and this is one of those. Excellent work!
Thank you, Woody. I trust you're an onions fan too!

The pantry was freezing! That pink newspaper was so distinctive. I wish I'd kept some of the football clippings we used to cut out.
They would have been fun to read.
Another beautiful and evocative piece of writing Matt.
PS love the Beckett photo... as you know!
Thank you, Andrew. I printed a cheap facsimile of the Beckett photo after seeing your best-of list!
Marbles bring back such a strong sense of nostalgia. I remember running then along gutters and the clink and the feel.xx
Gutters and drains: did we have nowhere clean to clink and clank our marbles!?
A fascinating read, as ever, thank you. And a very hard agree on Scott Walker
Thank you, Mark. I was late to Walker, and worked my way backwards from Farmer In The City. Albums '2' and '3' are wonderful things.
I couldn't agree more. Happy weekend to you
