I’m browsing your archive Matt and this is so lovely. I’m reminded of the marmalade toast and cup of milky tea a kind nurse handed me immediately after the birth of my daughter. I doubt I will ever enjoy a plate of food that much again.
Sue, I'm sorry to have missed your kind comment. One of the very few downsides of this platform is that I find notifications are (and certainly used to be) easy to miss. I can well imagine your memories of that marmalade toast and tea being so strong (indeed, I've literally just polished off a breakfast of exactly that!).
This is very beautiful writing, dear Matt. Words to luxuriate in. Details abound. Gently expressed but providing the spark for further enquiry. The walk through Umberto Eco's library is astonishing and I love the descriptions of the books we all acquire. Very lovely to lose oneself in this quality of writing, particularly knowing that you ration us to monthly morsels and so the exquisite wait for the next serving of your musings is as tantalising as the words themselves. Bravo. So glad you are writing. B
Thank you, Barrie. A month feels like a nice time to sit with three or four ideas and let things brew. I did think of you when I added the Eco link! Thanks for feeding back, it's greatly appreciated. x
Monthly feels 'considered' ... a gentle rhythm in keeping with the quiet curiosity behind it. I like it. I'm still at the 'pops of encouragement burst out all the time' level of regularity!

Beautiful and evocative writing Matt.
Thanks, Andrew, and not least for the seed which you helped to plant.
All fuelled by your wholesome and delicious lunch. You write very well. The care and thought that goes into it is obvious. More please!
Thank you. I think the slow monthly burn on a topic really helps the writing. I like the longer form.
Have you seen Moses in Rome Matt? It’s a colossal work
I've not, Beth. I imagined it big, though, not least for the time it took to complete. One day....!

The 'puppy phase'. :)
So very true!
Thank you for a fascinating read, and for the kind words. And that's a big knuckle tap to our mutual football love
Any excuse for a rendition of YNWA! And glad you enjoyed reading, Mark. Looking forward to your many future posts.
